Summer Exhibition-From Neo-realism to Postmodernism

5 July 2001 - 12 September 2001

Schoeni Art Gallery is excited to present works in oils by some of China's most important artists for our annual summer exhibition. The exhibition will rotate works in styles from Neo-realism to Postmodernism. Among the artists included in the exhibition are modern masters, Wang Yi Dong, Zhu Yi Yong and Zhang Li, as well as established young artists, Zeng Fan Zhi, Yue Min Jun, Zhong Biao, Guo Jin and Zhang Xiao Gang.

The history of Chinese oil painting has its real beginnings in the early decades of the last century around the founding of the Chinese Republic in 1912. It is a relatively short period of artistic experimentation, yet what we see today in Chinese oil paintings is an awesome range of diverse styles and a major attempt to enter the discourse of the contemporary art world. Unique to Chinese oil paintings is the mastery of technique that is found even in avant-garde works. At a time when artists elsewhere may be inclined to turn away from the "academic qualities" of painting, such as spatial rendering and light-and-shadow modeling, Chinese painters play an interesting role in preserving the great tradition of oil painting.

In this exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to survey Chinese oil paintings in a vibrant spectrum of styles all done within the past ten years. The distinctive styles presented in the exhibition will give viewers a taste of the prolificness of Chinese oil painters.

"Summer Exhibition-From Neo-realism to Postmodernism" will run from 5th July to 12 September 2001 at both locations of Schoeni Art Gallery.
