"Contemporary Thai" 10 January - 28 February 2002 In January 2002, Schoeni Art Gallery unveils its first exhibition of the year, "Contemporary Thai," an all Thai arts exhibition with over 40 paintings by 18 contemporary Thai artists. Schoeni Art Gallery has searched Thailand and gathered the best of contemporary Thai paintings for its first show of the year. This important exhibition presents a collection of the latest in Thai paintings-- a kaleidoscope of artistic styles and a mix of both young and established Thai artists. It is an exotic feast for the eyes of Hong Kong viewers. Participating Thai artists include many renowned painters from Chiang Mai, the artistic capital of northern Thailand. The uniqueness of their paintings lies not simply in form and presentation, but also in the clever blending of the Lan Na art tradition, which is distinctive to northern Thailand, with modern art styles and Buddhist philosophy. The result is works of outstanding beauty and content, and a reflection of life and society, cultures and beliefs of the people living in the northern region. Exhibiting artists include surrealist Ekasit Jirattikanon, abstract painters Serm Watcharin and Tawatchai Somkong, figurative painters Pornchai Jaima and Kitti Boonmee, semi-traditional painters Chakraphan Rattanachan, Arnan Ratchawangin, Yodchai Phominn and Anan Panin, and Phanthong Saenjan, Pichai Nirand, Theerapon Rurngpaisitporn, Roongroj Piamyossak, Ronarong Thanomtup, Niwat Gosol, Sangathit Sookarom, Pichai Gunkulsundhorn and Chamnan Thong-Upprakarn, whose works overlap stylistic categories. "Contemporary Thai" runs from 10 January to 28 February 2002, at Schoeni Art Gallery I on 21-31 Old Bailey Street, Central, Hong Kong.
