"Year of the Horse - Xia Xiao Wan" 7 - 21 March 2002 Schoeni Art Gallery celebrates the Chinese Year of the Horse with 11 exceptional oil paintings by famous artist, Xia Xiao Wan, in "Year of the Horse - Xia Xiao Wan." This special exhibition will showcase the dynamic image of the horse, all rendered with the artist's highly original painting style. Have you ever looked at a horse from below water? Xia Xiao Wan captures in his paintings the body of the horse from below water, where the muscles of the horse ripple in muted buoyancy. Never before seen in painting is the body of the horse being dissected so carefully by an artist and represented by him in such strangely distorted forms. Xia Xiao Wan is an artist who is not afraid to tackle difficult painting perspectives and a true existentialist who has chosen to analyze the body in reaction to circumstances. Xia Xiao Wan's art reflects the strong metaphysical concerns of the Eighties New Wave movement. In his paintings, the contrasting elements of light and dark, purity and distortion, strike a balance between the acutely expressionist style and the clean classical technique that has become the hallmark of his work. The artist is a graduate of the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and has many of his works collected by private collectors and museums world wide, including the Great Wall Museum and the Art Museum of the Hong Kong University. "Year of the Horse - Xia Xiao Wan" runs from 7 to 21 March, 2002, at Schoeni Art Gallery II on 27 Hollywood Road, Central.
