"Chen Yu + Yang Jin Song"

11 April - 1 May, 2002

Schoeni Art Gallery presents a duo-exhibition for April in "Chen Yu + Yang Jin Song." A total of fifteen oil paintings will be on show, with some reaching the height of the ceiling.

Reflections of the life and times in contemporary China are recorded in Chen Yu and Yang Jin Song's paintings with surprisingly polarized imageries. On the canvas, Chen minimizes activities, while Yang maximizes them. The artists' works do not share the same language of expression, but they similarly convey a modern China with an overwhelming metropolitan life.

Chen Yu sees the hectic contemporary lifestyle as something to re-evaluate and conveys this idea with his Lining Up series. This important series was first unveiled at his solo-exhibition at the gallery last September with almost a complete sellout. It typically illustrates a row of human figures all with eyes closed except one whose eyes remain open. The opened-eye figure symbolizes a rare moment of awakening in a person's life that sadly runs in repetition. Chen Yu will mount the second part of his Lining Up series in this exhibition, presenting a new facet of meaning to the series.

Yang Jin Song uses the smallest cell of society, namely, his own two-person nuclear family, to reflect on the changes he and his wife have experienced through the so-called modernization. Often bound by a sweater, the couple is represented by two giant heads leaning close together, as in the photograph attached to their marriage certificate. They stand in the midst of their home with numerous scattered household items and private accessories. These knickknacks crowding the canvas give a unique glimpse of not only the couple's lifestyle, but also that of the average mainland Chinese citizen in the 21st century.

"Chen Yu + Yang Jin Song" runs from 11 April to 1 May, 2002 at Schoeni Art Gallery I on 21-31 Old Bailey Street, Central.
