"Portraits by Jiang Guo Fang"
2 May - 29 May 2002

Schoeni Art Gallery presents 20 magnificent small portraits by renowned master painter Jiang Guo Fang in the exhibition, "Portraits by Jiang Guo Fang". This exciting exhibition will showcase the meticulous brushwork of one of the most famous Neo-Realists of our time in intimate panels created over the last two years.

Jiang Guo Fang's Forbidden City series is widely acclaimed and documented in numerous publications and literature internationally. His last solo-exhibition at Schoeni Art Gallery was a big event, with sizable attendance and exceptional response. This coming exhibition should be one of equivalent proportion. A note for viewers is the opportunity they will have to collect a small work of the artist, whose portfolio traditionally consists of large museum sizes.

Jiang Guo Fang's story has not been always easy. From his humble beginnings at the village in Jiangxi Province, he has fought his way through the Cultural Revolution and worked as swine breeder, pipe fitter and factory worker, while continuing with his art training. He entered the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1974, and later found the approbation he rightly deserves at his first solo-exhibition at Schoeni Art Gallery eight years ago. Jiang Guo Fang is today one of the leaders in his field, with paintings selling for top prices at Christie's auction house. His paintings are frequently copied by artisans at tourist markets around Asia, as in Stanley and on the Peak. Though their actions are not to be encouraged, they are interesting instances of Jiang Guo Fang's popularity and allure.

"Portraits by Jiang Guo Fang" opens on 2 May 2002 at Schoeni Art Gallery I on 21-31 Old Bailey Street, Central.
