Yu Chen
"Red Babies"

17 June - 14 July 2003

Schoeni Art Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Yu Chen, a female artist from China giving us an insight into how aspects of portraiture are now a major part of Chinese contemporary art.

Yu Chen
1963   Born in Guizhou.
1988   Graduated from the Engraving Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Yu Chen uses young revolutionary images in a playful way as the subject in her paintings. In preparation for this exhibition, she researched the behaviour of babies and she appears to have a close rapport with her subjects. Her observations are accurate and her babies having ice cream are somehow amusing. Some are holding a wooden toy rifle on their shoulder while enjoying a sweet treat, others are caught in a moment of despair or pulling a face. One cannot walk way from her canvases without a smile.

Yu Chen enjoys a fast rise of popularity with her Red Babies using bright and pop hues in thin layers and sticking ornaments on the cap or the uniform lapels.

An illustrated catalogue is available.
