Shuai Mei
"In Search of a Dream"

18 March - 21 April 2004

After the great success and sell out of her last exhibition in 2001, Shuai Mei is once again retuning to the Schoeni Art Gallery. Fifteen of her new paintings will comprise her third solo exhibition "In Search of a Dream".

Shuai Mei was trained at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and was graduated in 1994 with Bachelor of Arts.

Many people fall in love at first sight with Shuai Mei's paintings. There are numerous reasons to explain this infatuation with her work - her aestheticism; her meticulousness; her femininity; her flexibility between modernity and antiquity; as well as her intelligence.

Nostalgia is in fashion nowadays, evoking a bygone era. Shuai Mei's use of fine brushstrokes, egg tempera on canvas, everyday details and female figures can easily be categorized as nostalgic. Her style is reminiscent of calendar drawings as well as echoing boudoir poetry.

Shuai Mei's paintings also manifest a dream world of idyllic landscapes, which are sentimental of a by-gone era. In each of the scenes meticulously constructed by Shuai Mei, there are two women, one in classical costume and with a restrained expression; the other with modern clothing and carefree behaviour. Her paintings embody contradictions and sadness; reminiscence and desire. That is why they are so charmingly touching.
