Dear Friends of Schoeni Art Gallery,

On the 1st of September, Renate Kant, the Director of Renate Kant Studio for Conservation and Restoration Pte Ltd in Singapore, gave a very educating and informative illustrated talk entitled "Every Good Painting Cracks: Art Demands Attention" at the gallery. Her "lecture" spoke of painting materials and their reactions to certain environments; damages through lighting, humidity, temperature, pests, and especially through ignorance and wrong treatment; as well as how to handle, care for and maintain art works.

As I have said, as art lovers we know all too little on this subject matter, which is one of the reasons why I was so keen for Renate to come and "educate" us on this subject - Art demands attention indeed! And many of those who came to the event left with goose pimples (!) when they thought of the conditions of their own painting collection...

As we believe that the interest is there, and the professional service of a conservator for paintings and artworks on paper is needed, we will be starting a collaboration with Renate's studio. Not only will we be inviting Renate back for more talks, starting from next year, two or three weeks before there are auctions in Hong Kong, we will also be inviting Renate and her assistant to set up a mobile studio at the gallery to allow art collectors to bring in their works for consultation, consolidation on the spot or preparation for sending it to Singapore if the art piece needs extensive conservation at the studio. We shall be sending out reminders a month before, but should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

Through the admission fee we were also able to raise a donation of HK$5,880 for the Asia Art Archive, a Hong Kong registered charity.
