Schoeni Art Gallery II, 27 Hollywood Road
Exhibition: 8 September - 6 October 2005
Schoeni Art Gallery Ltd. is delighted to announce our latest exhibition for artist Mai Jinyao, 'Another Day, Another Place' at the gallery branch opening on the 8th of September 2005. Featuring the newest works by Mai Jinyao (K.S. Mak) the aptly titled 'Another Day, Another Place' shows the illustrious progression and adaptation of Mai's style even through the decade in which we have been closely involved with his career. Mak's world has witnessed many changes over his career, and throughout the ebullience of his journey in life, he has striven to "connect the word 'art' with [his] personal beliefs and with the physical realities of the human condition." (Mai Jinyao, 1995).
This newest selection of his works will exhibit 20 small panels which pithily portray the ambiguous nature of human interaction and the vagueness of personal relationships. Glibly referring to the momentary and spontaneous nature of the affinities that bind us, there are wry doubts toward the longevity of such relations. Nevertheless, Mak's panels provoke a personal interpretation of the dynamic between the figures that stand somewhat aloof in front of us - their deceit, or honesty, in diametric opposition to ours.
Mai Jinyao was born in Singapore in 1940 and has enjoyed popular acclaim throughout his education in the U.K and his professional career internationally. Most famously known for his satirical portrait of the last Governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten, Mak's painting "Talking Pictures" was exhibited in 'Painting the Century' - the prestigious and highly selective show of 101 portrait masterpieces held by the National Portrait Gallery in 1994. In many ways, Mak's success has been attributed to the inviting and playful nature of his protagonists and the witty and humourous composition of his abstract stylistic simplicity.
